Everyone knows, the Cisco VPN Client sucks as much as it can. I’ve long been searching for an alternative thats is more mac-like and user-friendly and finally found «Shimo».
Shimo gets out of your way and puts itself into the menu-bar where you can connect to your VPN. The cool part is that it (unlike the Cisco Client) stores your passwords in the OS-X Keychain. It integrates Growl notifications and is very fast. You still ned the Cisco VPN Client on your system, but you don’t need to deal with it’s ugly UI anymore.
Shimo used to be free and OpenSource under the GPL-Licence but the developer decided to go closed source and sell version 2 of Shimo. I’ve managed to download the latest version of Shimo published under GPL (Version 1.0.7) but the source has disappeared since then from the web. So I decided make version 1.0.7 available for download so that you may enjoy this shiny little peace of software too. You may redistribute it as long you respect the GPL and keep a copy of the copyright with the Application.
Please don’t forget to disable the auto-update feature since it will upgrade you to version 2 where you are stuck with nag-screens and such…
